the brief

A championship with a launch date

MyCareerCompassToday wanted a championship that students anywhere in the world could join. It also had a second job: to bring new families to their career portal.

It had to launch at a Dubai event with Gulf News, on a fixed date. There was no old version to fix. Everything, from sign-up to the last stage, had to be designed from scratch.

what shaped the design

Three things I had to solve

Ages 6 to 17, one product

A Grade 1 child and a Grade 12 student use the same screens. It had to feel fun for one and not childish for the other.

Parents sign up, kids play

Registration covers both the student and the parent, so sign-up and payment had to feel safe and simple for adults.

Six months is a long time

Kids come back across many weeks. They always need to know where they are and what to do next.

the big decision

Turning a compass into the whole journey

The championship has 6 stages: Discover, Explore, Experience, Create, Test and Celebrate. I made the compass itself the home page, so the journey is always one picture.

Stages unlock in order. A kid opens a stage, finishes its tasks, uploads their work for review, and earns a medal for it. That stage then locks as done and the next one opens.

It's game-like, with medals and progress, but not a cartoon game, so it still feels right for a 17-year-old.

what I learned

Design for the kid, not for me

With a launch date that could not move, I learned to move fast without cutting corners. Every screen was checked two or three times, and once through a kid's eyes. Taking their feedback and making the flow as seamless as possible mattered more than any single screen.
