Career portal redesign

MyCareerCompassToday is a career exploration portal for kids from KG to Grade 12, with their parents and schools. I redesigned the whole portal so every one of them can find their way, from a 4-year-old to a school admin.

the brief

Too much, for everyone

The old portal was very bright and very busy. There were too many elements and too much text on every screen, images that looked stretched or messy, and development issues that made things break.

Kids from KG to Grade 12 were meant to use it every day, but it wasn't friendly for them or for their parents. There was no clear path through it, and often no way to go back.

what shaped the design

Three things I had to solve

Too much on every screen

Kids can't find the one thing they need when everything shouts at once. Each screen needed one clear job.

No clear path, no way back

A child should always know where they are. Every page now has a simple way back to where they came from.

A portal, not a website

Kids don't just read it. They take quizzes, play games and upload their work, so every screen has to work, not just look good.

the big decision

Five people, five ways in

One portal serves very different people: young kids, older students, parents and schools. Instead of one layout for all, I designed a view for each.

The student side grows with the child, from big, simple picture cards for KG to a full career world for older students. Parents and schools get their own dashboards to follow progress.

KG to Grade 2. Big picture cards and very few words, so young kids can explore jobs on their own.

Calm, clear and still fun

Built to be tapped

Young kids often use a tablet. Big cards, bright pictures and short labels mean a 5-year-old can explore jobs like Housekeeper or Tour Guide without reading a paragraph.

what I learned

A portal is not a website

A website is read. A portal is used. Kids come here to do activities, play games and upload their work, so every screen had to be easy to do things on, not just nice to look at. Designing for that was a new experience for me.
